Aviemore Village Guide by Sharon

Aviemore village is located in the Cairngorms National Park in the Scottish Highlands. It is a tourist destination all year round for outdoor activities. If you are a rambler, cyclist, runner, canoeist, mountaineer, skier, angler, twitcher we've got you covered.
I've lived in Aviemore for 3 years and love it.

The Vibe

The locals are very friendly and welcoming. A mixture of Highlanders and Nationalities from around the world. The busiet time for the village is during the British school holidays. I recommend visiting in September, we tend to have glorious sunshine and the majority of the tourists have gone. Therefore the local supermarket shelves are back to being fully stocked.
December through to January is the coldest time of the year, we often get snow, so the skiers arrive. I recommend the  apres ski in the local pubs and bars!
In my opinion the village shops are not very inspiring unless you like outdoor clothing shops. However, there are a few hidden gems;
Mackinnons Butchers (fresh meat, poultry and homemade pies)
Pro Fish shop (fresh fish and shellfish)
Deli-Mair   (deli)
Ashers (Bakery)
Waterstones (Book shop)
Spey Valley Shopping (Luxury fashion, homeware, food and gifts. Macdonald Aviemore Resort)

Cafe Culture

My husband loves his coffee and in his opinion here are the best cafes in the village -
Cobbs - located on the high street, sit outside to people watch, but also to avoid the smell of fried food inside.
Cobbs - located at Loch Morlich, sit outside, great views.
Mountain Cafe - located on the high street, award winning food and great vegetarian options. You need to be patient, always busy, service slow but worth the wait.
Costa Coffee - located at Spey Valley Shopping, out of season a very quiet indoor area.
Costa Coffee - opened March 2018 - located just off the high street. Great atmosphere.
The Druie - located in the Rothiemurchus Estate, Coylumbridge. Great tray bakes. Very popular with the tourists, so sit outside.

My Favourite Walks

My reason for living in Aviemore is the fantastic scenery and the woodland walks. I spend a lot of time walking the trails through the Rothiemurchus Estate, visiting Lily Loch,  Green Loch, Loch Morlich and Loch an Eilein. Craigellachie Nature Reserve is a lovely place with several lochans and steep crags to climb. Sometimes I catch the local bus (number 31) up to the Cairngorm mountain ski resort and walk via the old "logging way" back down into Aviemore and then straight into The Old Bridge Inn pub for a pint!

It would be very remiss of me not to mention Great North Lodges for self catering accommodation in and around Aviemore.

Wildlife on holiday with your children this Christmas

πŸŽ„πŸŽ„  Things to do on holiday with your children this ChristmasπŸŽ„πŸŽ„

Have you been to the Highland Wildlife Park recently?  You can drive round the park and see a lot of the big animals up close. The visitor centre has a lovely cafe and shop, plenty of parking and sits right next to the other enclosures.  See Polar Bears, Wolves, Tigers, Red Pandas as well as native species.

Your little ones will just adore seeing Santa's reindeer at home in
Glenmore.  The reindeer also dress
up for their performance in The Christmas Procession taking place in Aviemore. This is a must see as local children perform along the main road accompanied by floats, music and lots of fun.

While you are in Glenmore, visit the Sleddog Centre to see huskies in action and take a stroll along Loch Morlich beach to see the ducks, who live there year round.
